Thimphu, 3rd Feb 2005 – The Volunteers in Bhutan Committee have collected more than three hundred thousand ngultrum in support of the victims of the recent Tsunami. The money was presented to the United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF, at the State of the Worlds Children's Report 2005 launch ceremony in Thimphu on Monday, January 31 st . Ms. Eva Piszczek received Nu. 3,16,500 on behalf of UNICEF from Ms. Tshering Lham of the Royal Society for Protection of Nature and Ms. Kesang Chuki Dorji of the Bhutan Broadcasting Corporation, both members of the Volunteers in Bhutan Committee.
Just a week earlier, more than a hundred walkers made their way through the season's first snowfall to participate in a ‘Walk of Life' held in Thimphu on 22nd January 2005. The participants were made up of a broad section of society with their family and friends. This was the first activity organized by members of the Volunteers in Bhutan Committee since the ‘ Tug of War' held on International Volunteer Day on 5 th December 2004.
UNICEF Representative Mrs. Anoja Wijeyyesekera stated that the contributions would go towards providing the much-needed assistance in the disaster struck areas. More importantly it would go towards rebuilding the living conditions and lives of children in these areas.
Mr. Seishu Ueno, a JOCV/JICA Information Technology specialist working at the High court, and who design edthis VIB website, won two free tickets to Bangkok, sponsored by Druk Air. Other supporters of the walk included the Thimphu Traffic Police, Bhutan Beverages Corporation Ltd and Holiday Home Caterers.
